KINETO AND NXP EXPAND RELATIONSHIP FOR UMA-ENABLED MOBILE HANDSETS

Milpitas, Calif.
January 31, 2007

Enable OEMs to deliver improved roaming capabilities and a seamless, cross-network mobile experience to consumers

Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology, today announced that it has expanded its relationship with NXP Semiconductors to provide UMA technology for the Nexperia™ cellular system solution 5210, a next generation baseband platform ideal for dual-mode handsets. Kineto and NXP previously collaborated on a UMA-enabled version of the Nexperia cellular system solution 6120, which is currently used in commercial UMA-enabled handsets from a number of manufacturers, including Samsung.

“By 2011, shipments of dual-mode wireless handsets will be well in excess of 300 million worldwide,” said Philip Solis, principal analyst at ABI Research. “Handset manufacturers are bringing new handsets to the market quickly, and service providers are beginning to offer UMA services commercially.”

”With fixed-mobile converged services gaining traction in Europe and Asia, consumers are not only seeking low-cost calling but also uninterrupted voice clarity even if they are indoors,” said GertJan Kaat, senior vice president and general manager of NXP’s mobile and personal business unit. “NXP’s Nexperia cellular system solution 5210 builds on Kineto’s UMA software to enable consumers to truly enjoy the economic benefits of dual-mode phones without compromising on call quality as consumers switch unnoticed between mobile and WiFi networks.”

The Nexperia™ cellular system solution 5210 improves performance while lowering cost in mid-range (2.75G) GSM/GPRS/EDGE mobile phones. It combines very high integration with an exceptionally efficient architecture and eliminates the need for a separate coprocessor or audio chip. The Nexperia™ cellular system solution 5210 integrates a high performing Bluetooth/ WLAN co-existence solution, allowing consumers to make high quality voice calls with dual-mode handset in combination with a Bluetooth enabled headset.

“NXP has a unique and leading position in the UMA market with its technology and customer base,” said Mark Powell, vice president of the client business unit and co-founder of Kineto Wireless. “Kineto is delighted to expand our relationship with NXP and we look forward to the many UMA handsets that will come from NXP’s excellent platforms.”

About UMA Technology
Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology is the 3GPP global standard for fixed-mobile convergence. UMA enables secure, scaleable access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over broadband IP access networks. By deploying UMA technology, mobile operators can deliver a number of compelling fixed-mobile convergence services. The most well known application of UMA is dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets, which enable subscribers to automatically roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private WLANs. Leading operators around the world have embraced UMA technology as the foundation of their fixed-mobile convergence strategy, including Telecom Italia, France Telecom/Orange and TeliaSonera.
