KINETO READY TO SUPPORT COMMERCIAL FEMTOCELL ROLLOUTS

Milpitas, California
February 6, 2008

Latest Product Release Meets Operator Requirements for Full-Service Deployment

Kineto Wireless, the key innovator and leading supplier of 3GPP UMA technology, today announced the availability of the latest software release for its industry-leading UMA Network Controller (UNC), which forms the basis of a highly scalable and standards based Femtocell RAN Gateway. This new version builds upon previous UNC releases to meet the full range of operator requirements for commercial femtocell service rollouts anticipated in 2008. The Kineto UNC is currently running in multiple femtocell trials with major mobile operators worldwide in conjunction with partners that include Ubiquisys and NEC.

“Time to market is critical for operators evaluating femtocell solutions,” said Michael Cooney, associate vice president of product management for Kineto Wireless. “By providing a commercially deployable system today, operators can confidently evaluate femtocell technology and quickly prepare for commercial service launches as soon as next quarter.”

Key features in this latest UNC release include:

  • Zero touch femtocell installation: The Kineto UNC enables consumers to switch on, move, add
and change the location of a femtocell with no manual intervention from the operator or provisioning
    in the network.
  • Full-service transparency: The Kineto UNC supports delivery of all voice, SMS, video calling, packet and IMS-based services to handsets when connected to a femtocell.
  • Handover: The Kineto UNC enables mobile handsets to move between a femtocell and a 2G or 3G macro radio network while maintaining session continuity. This includes seamless handover support for voice and video calls as well as data sessions.
  • Subscriber access control: Kineto’s advanced access control capabilities, already proven in large scale commercial dual-mode handset deployments, enable operators to easily control when and where femtocells can connect to their core network, as well as manage which handsets can receive service from which femtocells.
  • Scalable deployment: Supporting a nationwide femtocell service deployment requires a scalable, high-availability system, with complete operational, administration and management (OA&M) capabilities. Already in-service supporting large-scale commercial dual-mode handset service globally, the Kineto UNC is a proven, robust platform. This release also adds a Virtual UNC feature whereby a single UNC system can be the gateway to multiple MSCs and SGSNs, dramatically reducing network signaling in scaled deployments.
  • Standard “Iu-over-IP” femtocell interface: To meet mass market consumer needs, a femtocell solution must be able to support femtocell devices from multiple vendors. This level of interoperability can only be achieved by providing an open, standard femtocell-to-core network interface. The Kineto UNC utilizes an “Iu-over-IP” approach based on the existing 3GPP UMA/GAN standard.

This release of the UNC is available immediately to Kineto’s global systems integration partners.

About UMA Technology
UMA technology is the 3GPP global standard for fixed-mobile convergence. UMA enables secure, scalable access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over broadband IP access networks. By deploying UMA technology, mobile operators can deliver a number of compelling fixed-mobile convergence services. The most well-known applications of UMA include dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets and 3G femtocells access points. Leading operators around the world have embraced UMA technology as the foundation for their fixed-mobile convergence strategy, including France Telecom/Orange, T-Mobile US, TeliaSonera, British Telecom and Cincinnati Bell.
