KINETO ENHANCES UMA CLIENT SOFTWARE TO SUPPORT “UNIVERSAL” MOBILE ACCESS SERVICES

Milpitas, Calif.
February 12, 2007

Leading UMA Client Software Expands Beyond Dual-Mode Handsets to UMA-Enabled Femtocell,
Terminal Adaptor, and Softmobile Services

Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology,
today announced that it has enhanced its industry-leading UMA client software to support the development of
additional “universal” mobile access solutions. Initially created to support the development of UMA-enabled dualmode
handsets, Kineto’s UMA client software has been upgraded to also support development of UMA-enabled
femtocell, terminal adaptor, and softmobile products.

“With the deployment of UMA-enabled dual-mode handset services now underway, mobile operators are looking
to leverage their UMA infrastructure investment to offer a number of additional convergence services,” said Mark
Powell, general manager of the client business unit and co-founder of Kineto Wireless. “These new services will
help operators to further accelerate fixed-to-mobile substitution, as well as counter the increasing threat from
alternative VoIP and wVoIP service providers.”

UMA, initially recognized as the 3GPP standard for dual-mode handset services, is now viewed as a generic
approach for providing secure, scalable and cost-effective access to mobile voice, data, and IMS services over the
Internet. As a result, mobile operators are now leveraging the 3GPP standard to support a number of developing
convergence services including:

  • UMA-Enabled Femtocells
Coverage within the home continues to be a challenge for many mobile subscribers. However, using UMAenabled femtocells, mobile operators will soon have a secure, scalable, and cost-effective approach for providing high-performance coverage directly within subscriber homes. UMA-enabled femtocells are low-cost licensed access points that operators can provide to subscribers. Once attached to a subscriber’s existing broadband service, a femtocell connects back to the operators core network over the Internet using UMA to provide dedicated mobile coverage for all subscribers within the home.
  • UMA-Enabled Terminal Adaptors
Mobile operators looking to enter the fixed-line VoIP market can take advantage of UMA-enabled terminal adaptors to deliver high-quality fixed telephone service using their existing mobile infrastructure. With a UMA-enabled terminal adaptor, a “home” phone line can be easily added to an existing mobile package to create a compelling fixed and mobile service bundle.
  • UMA-Enabled Softmobiles
Softphone clients on laptops have become a staple of internet savvy consumers. Providing a UMA-enabled softmobile service enables mobile operators to offer services comparable to alternative VoIP providers, yet with the added benefit of a single, consistent mobile experience and phone number.

Kineto is displaying these “universal” mobile access applications, including its client software product, at its stand
(Hall 1, Stand 1A49) at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona this week.

About UMA Technology
Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology is the 3GPP global standard for fixed-mobile convergence. UMA
enables secure, scalable access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over broadband IP access networks. By
deploying UMA technology, mobile operators can deliver a number of compelling fixed-mobile convergence
services. The most well-known application of UMA is dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets, which enable subscribers
to automatically roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private WLANs. Leading operators
around the world have embraced UMA technology as the foundation for their fixed-mobile convergence strategy,
including Telecom Italia, France Telecom/Orange and TeliaSonera. For more information, please
