Kineto Wireless, Inc., the key innovator and leading supplier of UMA technology, today announced the latest software release for its industry leading UMA Network Controller (UNC). The new UNC release demonstrates Kineto’s continued leadership position in the UMA market, introducing more industry break-through features that simplify the deployment and improve the efficiency of UMA-based dual-mode handset (DMH) services.
“Kineto prides itself on listening to the business needs of our operator customers and delivering innovative features to directly address them,” said Michael Cooney, associate vice president of product line management for Kineto Wireless. “Based on operator feedback, we’re introducing several key features that simplify the integration
of our UNC into a mobile operator’s existing network, dramatically increase system capacity to meet the growing demand for mobile data services, as well as add support for the next generation of 3G/UMTS UMA-based dual- mode handsets.”
Key break-through features introduced in the latest Kineto UNC release include:
The UMA SuperCell
Until now, deploying UMA required mobile operators to undertake complex and time consuming configuration changes within their existing mobile networks to enable GSM-to-Wi-Fi handovers, ensure the correct routing of emergency (911) calls, as well as support differential charging of services delivered via UMA. To address this challenge, Kineto is introducing the UMA SuperCell feature into this latest UNC release. With this new feature, operators can now enable all Wi-Fi access points within a large geographic area to appear as one large “super cell” to their existing mobile networks. As a result, mobile network configuration changes required to support Cellular/Wi-Fi handovers are dramatically reduced, while still ensuring emergency calls are routed correctly based on a subscriber’s true location. The UMA SuperCell feature also enhances an operator’s ability to identify mobile voice and data services delivered via UMA, including the ability to identify UMA traffic by the type of Wi-Fi location being used by the subscriber (e.g. home, office, and hotspot).
10X Mobile Data Capacity Increase
When traditional mobile data services are delivered via UMA, they operate at broadband data rates, providing subscribers with a more compelling mobile data user experience. As a result, subscribers are starting to put greater demands on an operator’s mobile data service infrastructure when connected via UMA. To address this challenge, Kineto is introducing a break-through 10-fold increase in mobile data service capacity into its latest UNC release. This capacity increase is achieved with support for Gb over IP technology as well as a quadrupling of the number of Gb interfaces supported per UNC chassis.
3G/UMTS Handset Support
While the initial focus of UMA deployments has been on providing high-performance, low-cost mobile services for low and mid-tier 2.5G handsets, many operators are now looking to add higher-end 3G handsets into their UMA device portfolios. To address this challenge, Kineto has also added support for dual-mode 3G/Wi-Fi handsets into this latest release, including support for the handover of active voice calls and mobile data/IMS services between Wi-Fi and 3G/UMTS networks.
Kineto’s UNC is currently deployed in operator networks around the globe and is available through Kineto channel partners worldwide.
About UMA Technology
UMA technology is the 3GPP global standard for fixed-mobile convergence. UMA enables secure, scalable access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over broadband IP access networks. By deploying UMA technology, mobile operators can deliver a number of compelling fixed-mobile convergence services. The most well known application of UMA is dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets, which enable subscribers to automatically roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private WLANs. Leading operators around the world have embraced UMA technology as the foundation for their fixed-mobile convergence strategy, including France Telecom/Orange, TeliaSonera, and Telecom Italia.
