Companies confirm interoperability to meet growing demand for UMA technology worldwide
Kineto Wireless, the key innovator and leading supplier of Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology, and Reef Point Systems (www.reefpoint.com), the leader in carrier-class security solutions for fixed-mobile convergence networks, announced today that the companies have completed interoperability testing and that the Reef Point UMA Security Gateway is qualified for deployment in conjunction with Kineto’s industry leading UMA network controller.
The two companies have ensured interoperability between the Reef Point UMA Security Gateway and the Kineto IP Network Controller at the Kineto UMA test facility in Milpitas, California. Service providers and telecom equipment vendors may now select the Reef Point UMA Security Gateway as part of a Kineto UNC deployment with the assurance of a compatible solution. Reef Point and Kineto are exhibiting at this week’s Informa FMC Conference (www.telecoms.com/fmc) at the Conrad Hotel in London, January 25-27, 2006.
“As demand for UMA solutions continues to grow, Kineto is partnering with innovative companies with exceptional expertise for securing UMA environments,” said Rick Gilbert, president and CEO of Kineto Wireless. “The Reef Point Gateway has a comprehensive set of security capabilities and the scalability required for the fixed-mobile convergence market today.”
“This partnership demonstrates Kineto and Reef Point’s clear understanding that the security portion of any complete UMA solution must provide massive scalability,” said Steve Diamond, CEO of Reef Point Systems. “Kineto has recognized that our Security Gateway’s scalability is industry leading, protecting up to half a million simultaneous connections.”
Mobile operators view UMA as a cost-effective method to manage and accelerate fixed to mobile usage in home and enterprise environments. By deploying UMA technology, operators can enable users to roam and handover between mobile networks and wireless LAN networks within their home or office. The subscriber, equipped with a dual-mode mobile/Wi-Fi handset, can make calls across any generic wireless LAN and IP network, with the call and signaling data encapsulated in secure IP tunnels. These tunnels encrypt data ensuring privacy for voice calls over the public Internet.
Kineto UNC
The core component of Kineto's mobile/Wi-Fi convergence solution is the Kineto UNC (UMA Network Controller). The Kineto UNC is a carrier-class network element that integrates with a service provider’s existing voice (MSC) and data (SGSN) switching systems, and uses standard interfaces to extend high-performance mobile services over IP access networks and WLANs. The Kineto UNC manages and secures all subscriber access to mobile, voice, data, and IMS services from various WLAN locations, and facilitates automatic, seamless roaming and handover between licensed radio access networks and WLANs. Based on soft-switch architecture, the Kineto UNC is a robust, highly scalable carrier-class core network element. Designed for deployment within wireless carrier central offices, the Kineto UNC delivers uncompromising resiliency and meets the most stringent service provider reliability, service availability, and scalability requirements.
Reef Point UMA Security Gateway
Reef Point Systems’ purpose-built, carrier-class UMA Security Gateway provides comprehensive security for UMA networks. Unlike other solutions, such as session border controllers, the Reef Point solution is massively scalable, securing up to half a million simultaneous connections. The gateway enables secure Wi-Fi roaming and provides subscribers with confidentiality by encapsulating the call and signaling data in secure IPSec tunnels. It provides robust threat defense including stateful firewalls with Denial of Service attack prevention, intrusion detection services, custom firewall filtering, dynamic virtual routing with Network Address Translation, and session limiting to protect against external threats. With its uncompromising high-performance and reliability through Reef Point’s patented Flow Application Streaming Technology™ and optimum mix of custom ASICs/FPGAs and network processors, the UMA Security Gateway supports Internet Key Exchange v2 (IKEv2) and Extensible Authentication Protocol Method for GSM Subscriber Identity Modules (EAP-SIM) to provide scalable mutual authentication, encryption, and data integrity safeguards for signaling, voice, and data.
